Wound edge protector for prevention of surgical site infection in laparotomy: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Plastic wound retractors as bacteriological barriers in gastrointestinal surgery: a prospective multi-institutional trial

A prospective, observational, multi-centre study including 250 patients obtained 500 samples for bacterial culture from the inside and outside surfaces of a plastic wound retractor. It was determined that use of a plastic wound retractor should result in the reduction of surgical site infection by reducing wound exposure to enteric bacteria in gastrointestinal surgery.

Effectiveness of using Wound Retractor for preventing post-operative SSI in colorectal surgeries (in Japanese)

An analysis of methods of wound margin protection for 375 colorectal cases found that using no drape resulted in a 27.6% SSI rate (52 out of 190), using a ring drape resulted in a 24.3% SSI rate (18 out of 74), and using a wound retractor resulted in a 3.4% SSI rate (4 out of 118) – one-seventh of the ring drape SSI rate. Investigators consider that using the wound retractor is cost effective, especially for contaminated procedures such as colorectal surgery.

A Wound Protector Shields Incision Sites from Bacterial Invasion

Bacterial swabs were taken from the incision margin and abdominal cavity side of a wound protector from 272 patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery. The results suggest that the wound protector protects an incision site from bacterial damage.

Randomized Controlled Investigation of the Anti-Infective Properties of the Alexis Retractor/Protector of Incision Sites

A randomized, controlled trial of 221 patients undergoing nontraumatic gastrointestinal surgery demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in superficial incisional surgical site infection when a wound protector/retractor was used. Results indicated that the use of the wound retractor would protect wounds from bacterial contamination and thus prevent infection.

Infection Rates Using Protectors in Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

For laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures, the left lower quadrant incision used for tissue removal from the gastrotomy and enterotomy closure and EEA introduction for creating the gastrojejunostomy anastomosis experienced a significant decrease in wound infection incidences when a wound protector/retractor was used.

A retrospective review of 141 patients undergoing laparoscopic-assisted colectomy using a wound protector concluded that although wound protectors are useful for mechanical retraction of smaller wounds, they do not significantly diminish the rate of post-operative wound infections.
